A typical 13-night itinerary taking you from beautiful Broome to outback Wyndham.
Your Kimberley Classic Adventure will begin at approximately 5:30pm with a warm welcome aboard your vessel. Once underway the crew will treat you to your first delicious dinner as we cruise up the coast towards the Dampier Archipelago.
Wake-up to cruising across the vast King Sound to Yampi Sound. Tide permitting, you’ll collect some legendary Kimberley Rock Oysters for the evening entrée. Then it’s on to your first Kimberley freshwater swim under an awe-inspiring waterfall. Back onboard, we’ll relax and enjoy the afternoon cruise through the Koolan Island Gap, weaving past many little islands on our way to Talbot Bay.
The day will begin with an exciting dingy ride through the famous Horizontal Waterfalls. We’ll then explore the amazing geography behind Talbot Bay.
Once back onboard you’ll be treated to a scenic cruise through the Kingfisher Islands to Doubtful Bay. Here you’ll discover an ancient Aboriginal Art gallery perched high on the side of Raft Point.
The evening will be spent anchored under the magnificent Point, watching the rocky outcrop glow and change colour as the sun slowly immerses itself in the darkening Indian Ocean.
Doubtful Bay offers an impressive array of adventure activities. You’ll be encouraged to help decide what areas we’ll visit, from a waterfall and swim at Ruby Falls, to fishing at 3-Ways, to a cruise down the spectacular Sale River or a barbeque lunch on the sandy beach under a gloriously green rainforest canopy.
Marvel at the waterfalls of Montgomery Reef in an early morning foray along the remarkably different reef structure. Listen to the incredible history of the area and see turtles grazing on the exposed seagrass. We’ll also spot sharks and the odd dugong or two. The afternoon will be spent around Langii, where we can see the ‘Petrified Warriors’ and swim in crystal clear waters.
On this day, we’ll visit Camden Harbour and Sheep Island the first attempted European settlement in the Kimberley. You’ll marvel at the scenery as we cruise through Port George and Treachery Passage to Saint George’s basin. The crew will point out major Kimberley features such as Mt Trafalgar and Mt Waterloo as we enter the Prince Regent River. After lunch we’ll head up Camp Creek for a trek and a swim in a beautiful pool at the base of another wonderful waterfall.
We’ll spend the morning fishing and exploring the interesting tributaries in our immediate vicinity.
Your luxury vessel will anchor right next to the cascading waterfall. At the top of the falls you can swim in a multitude of crystal clear freshwater pools and frolic beneath the magical waterfalls which feed them.
The evening will be spent cruising out of the river to the delightful Careening Bay.
An early morning beach expedition will have you viewing an ancient Boab Tree on which the crew of the HMC Mermaid carved the name of their vessel in 1820. We will then make our way to the picturesque Hunter River.
Sandstone cliffs and ancient rainforests make this river a seemingly endless stretch of scenic heaven.
We’ll go ashore on Bigge Island to view a fascinating Aboriginal art gallery which seemingly depicts early European contact. You’ll be able to stretch your legs on the white sandy beach or cool off with a swim. We’ll have lunch while cruising around Cape Voltaire on the way to the mighty Mitchell River.
This is a huge, open estuary-type river, which is ideal for hunting the elusive Barramundi, one of the world’s great fishing challenges and eating delights. After lunch we’ll indulge in a freshwater swim in Surveyors Creek or rendezvous with helicopters for a flight over the Mitchell Plateau to the amazing Mitchell Falls. The helicopter flights are not operated by Great Escape. We’ll depart at sunset for Vansittart Bay.
After a quick fish and a relaxing morning onboard we’ll cruise to the beach for a swim and to view the mysterious and famous Bradshaw galleries. After lunch we’ll journey further down into the cove to explore an old DC3, which crashed near Truscott airbase at the end of World War II. The evening will be spent cruising around Cape Londonderry, (Western Australia’s most north-western tip) to the magnificent King George River.
Your backdrop for breakfast will be the awesome cathedral-like gorges as we cruise up the magnificent King George River. You’ll spend today trekking, exploring and drinking in the fantastic scenery this river has to offer in overwhelming abundance.
The Berkeley River is a spectacular river system that offers a wide variety of adventure activities. Once inside the river there is a beautiful cruise down through the sandstone cliffs to where the freshwater rain flow meets the salty sea. There are a number of freshwater creeks which give us a few tempting options for walking and swimming. In the afternoon we’ll move back down the river and anchor just beyond the mouth to fully appreciate the splendour of the late afternoon colours.
Tie off at the jetty and depart about 8:30am. Air-conditioned coach transfers to Kununurra are included.
There are invariably heartfelt farewells and the swapping of addresses and contact details by those who’d not met before their shared adventure began.
